Did Your Computer Seem Faster When it
was New? Here's Why!
Over time it is inevitable that your computer
will accumulate errors and corruption in its registry database, potentially causing the
symptoms such as slow boot-up, unknown dial-up commands, slow internet browsing, slow
E-mail up and downloads, software on your PC that you did not install or download,
connections to unknown or X-rated web-sites, frequent popup's of unwanted web-sites,
warnings of "infections" that your PC has, links to so-called repair sites
etc... These problems will eventually make your computer slow, unstable or unusable.
The fact is that over 94% of all
computers connected to the Internet has some form or all of the below describe problems
& infections!
As described above, these problems
happen for 3 reasons:
1. You do not have a anti-virus program on
your PC, or the program that you have installed does not function properly, outdated virus
definitions or expired programs will also no longer provide protection against the latest
virus strains and attack's.
2. You do not have Add-aware, Spyware
or Malware protection. These type of "virus" programs are not viewed by
virus protection programs as critical threads and therefore ignored in most instances,
however they are a major problem on most computers with an internet connection.
Add-aware, also know as
"Advertising software" is used by web-site developers to provide market research
information and market targeting. The software is downloaded to your PC without you
knowledge or connect in the form of a "cookie", as a small non threatening
packet of information with and expiry date. This "cookie" installs itself on you
PC and every time you visit the relevant domain or web-site, it "reports in" to
the source database. Most computers that is on the net for 3 months or more will have
anything from 30 to 300 of these cookies installed on them. These programs dramatically
slow down your internet connections and share bandwidth with your ISP that you pay for!
Spyware, this is a more
malicious and threatening version of Add-aware, this type of program, as with Add-aware
gets on your PC without your knowledge or connect to the internet in the background
without your consent. It is sometimes introduced to you via a "Trojan" program
(Remember the horse given to the city of Troy as a "present" while all the time
soldiers were hiding inside?, once the horse was inside the city walls, the soldiers could
capture the city and open the doors from inside for the rest of the army), Spyware
frequently uses this method op "phising", another term used for getting an
unsuspected browser to obtain a "free" download or program but in fact
downloading a Spyware program. Spyware can be used to read E-mail, capture your E-mail
contact database, find passwords, credit card numbers, bank details and much more. A
well-know type of Spyware is called a "Key-logger" this program records
keystrokes and pages viewed, information captured will be send to the host every time you
log on to the internet. Spyware can also delete and corrupt critical system information on
your hard drive.
Malware, is a general
description for all other programs not clearly Add-aware or Spyware, these programs tend
to change system registry entrees and will in some cases damage you operating system, slow
your computer down, capture information and generally be disruptive and annoying.
3. Over time it is inevitable that you will
accumulate errors, clutter and debris in your computer's registry database. Common causes
of these problems include:
- Installing and Removing applications
- Online games
- LAN'ing, connecting to other users in a games
forum without virus protections and sharing files
- Applications crashes
- Upgrades of software programs
- Unwanted messenger popup's
- PC errors appearing on system screen
- Unknowingly or knowingly installing pirate
games and software
- Unknowingly or knowingly installing
"Free" software without reading the suppliers agreement
- Unknowingly or knowingly installing software
from a friends CD or Flash drive without first scanning for infections
-
While many errors will go unnoticed, the more
errors that your computer has, the higher the chances that you'll experience trouble.
Correcting such errors can have the following benefits:
- FASTER computer start-up
- FASTER program start-up and operation
- MORE RELIABLE operation
- UPDATED operating platform software i.e.;
Vista, XP. 98 or 95
- STABLE operating system
- UPDATED Virus software and definitions
- UPDATED and installed Add-Aware, Spyware and
Malware software and definitions
- UNCLUTTERED system registry
- CLEAN and reliable data backups
