The inspiration to establish DNS LAB (Datakey Notebook Solutions Laboratory) was conceived in 2009. The reason why we at DATAKEY GROUP decided to make this significant capital investment into our business offering was based on a number of market indicators but also realising the shortfalls that the industry faced, especially here in South Africa.

Early in 2009 We noticed a "shift" in the IT market which became more pronounced during 2010 that new computer buyers started to prefer to invest in Notebooks rather than Desktop systems. In early 2009, 4 Notebooks were sold for every 6 Desktop PC's, however at the end of 2009 beginning 2010 we noticed that 6 out of 10 units sold were Notebooks, and currently more that 8 units out of 10 are Notebook systems. We are not stating that Notebooks will replace the traditional IBM compatible Desktop PC completely, there are still many applications in the IT industry were use a Desktop PC makes more practical sense than a Notebook.

	Status symbol:	"Laptops" used to be for the "elite" , (Rich people and and business tycoons), now "Notebooks" are used by home users, teachers, schoolchildren and university students alike.

	Mobility:	"Laptops" used to be heavy, cumbersome and slow, (snail-brick in a bag), nowadays Notebooks are fast, featured filled, light and easy to carry making it an ideal travel partner.

THE DOWNSIDE OF NOTEBOOKS:

We also realised that there were some significant and possibly detrimental drawbacks on investing in a Notebook such as;

	Fixed architecture:	Unlike a Desktop PC that is compatible and expandable in it's capability over a long period of time, a Notebook is a bit like a "sports car", it may be fast and sleek, but if it comes with two seats you cannot fit another backseat in it at a later stage.

	Proprietary:	Unlike the "IBM compatible" modular Desktop, Notebooks are in most cases proprietary devices, this means that only parts designed for a specific chassis or motherboard will fit that model or make when part replacement is required,

	Out of warranty:	Notebook repairs "out-of-warranty" can become a very expensive affair, when a component requires replacing or upgrading, or the model has been discontinued, DNS Lab has access to a large database of suppliers selling new or refurbished spares, we also buy older models or un-repairable models for parts, thus assisting your client to obtain spare parts at reduced price,

	Heat and G-Shock:	Notebooks are designed to withstand a fair amount of abuse, Notebooks do suffer from "heat-stroke" and excessive intentionally or unintentionally "G-shock" abuse from users, reducing the life-span and usability of the systems,

	Heat problems:	As mentioned above, heat is a Notebooks biggest enemy, heat causes dry solder joints on motherboards, cooling fan failure and in the most severe cases, processor burnout, rendering the Notebook unusable or "disabled" permanently. It is recommended to have a Notebook services at least once a year to remove dust, lint and other foreign particles from the fan units, extractor vents and keyboard to extend the usability and life-span of the Notebook.

	Battery life-span:	In the last couple of years great improvements have been done to design batteries with intelligent power saving features to extend and increase battery life, standby time and usable hours, however all rechargeable batteries have a limited life-span capability and will eventually fail. Also in most models batteries are only provided with a 7 day warranty!,

	Power supply life-span:	These vital "add-on" devices also tend to have a limited life-span, the become pet chew toys, get left behind in hotels and "disappear" as if "called home". They also get damaged through power surges and tend to wear out at the "hinge" points when users wind the cable tightly around the power unit. These devices are also expensive to replace and designed to be "product specific" due to voltage and Amp requirements, the sockets are also make and model specific.

	Power socket life-span:	The power socket of a Notebook is its "lifeblood" connection to the external power supply to charge the battery, no socket, no charge, no mobility. These sockets do fail over time due miss placement or alignment of the connector into the socket, abrasion to the read connectors inside the socket wear out or the socket gets damaged due to stress placed on it when a user trips over the lead while connected,

	Monitor failure:	Notebook monitors, are high-tech fragile interface devices. Replacing a cracked monitor can be very costly, in some instances it may even be "economically un-viable' to replace the screen since it may cost as much as 70% of the Notebooks original cost.

	Hinge failure:	Notebook monitors are hinged to the chassis, these hinges do wear over time, they may become loose or the connection ribbon cable connecting the base with the monitor may crack or break with excessive use over time. Hinges also crack and break due to impact or misalignment du to the incorrect opening of the monitor (pulling at the one edge), in certain cases damaged hinges may render the Notebook unrepeatable.

	Keyboard failure:	This integrated user interface device has to withstand a lot of abuse. Ash, dust, liquid, food and sometimes, physical impact. Over time keys get "lost" and stuck, in severe cases a complete replacement will be required,

	Technical skills:	There is a world-wide shortage in qualified technical / specialised skills to perform Notebook repairs down to board board and chip level. Unlike Desktop PC's, Notebook problems are more difficult to identify, and specialised microscope skills are require to do delicate repairs to board, there is also only a handful of experienced and qualified trainers in South Africa.

	Specialised tooling:	Even with specialised technical skills, state-of-the-art, industry specific and very expensive tri-nocdular microscopes, tooling and test equipment is required to repair Notebooks, that has to be imported at great cost from abroad. These tooling and microscopes can not be purchased at your local hardware dealer or computer part supplier,

	Out of warranty:	Original suppliers will often advise users of "out-of-warranty" Notebooks to "write-off" an older model so that they may sell a "New" model to the client, this may result in loss of vital or un-replaceable data to most Notebook users and unexpected expense,

	No repair - no extra charge:	If an item is un-repairable or economically non-viable to repair, then no additional charges are levied above the initial booking fee against the DNS LAB Agents or clients account, goods are returned as is,

	Notebook credit purchase:	On occasion DNS LAB may offer to purchase an unrepeatable Notebook from a client either in the form of a credit on a sale of a new notebook or as a cash transfer to client account.

	Serial no tracking:	DNS LAB uses an in-house, highly sophisticated part and system tracking system based on serial number tracking,

	Online booking forms:	DNS LAB provides an online booking form to speed up the notification and collection process from your business, and thus providing the client wit a fast turnaround,

	Printed jobcards:	DNS LAB supplies a comprehensive fault-find and repair jobcard with each unit, which is shipped to the DNS LAB Agent, 1 x copy for client and 1 x copy for Agent file,
