I want to protect my valuable equipment from the devastating damages caused by electrical surges and lightning surge:

.

DID YOU KNOW...

There are roughly 2000 storms in progress around the world at any one time producing about 30 to 100 cloud to ground flashes each second or about 5 million flashes a day!

The amount of energy in a lightning bolt is equivalent to a seismic wave from a 1 kiloton explosion.

It is often incorrectly assumed that the insertion of a UPS before a PC based system will provide protection. In its basic form, the UPS is designed to provide a short period of power stability in the event of a mains loss. Some enlightened manufacturers include basic surge protection to the mains incoming line, although this is frequently at its most basic form and capable of withstanding only the mildest of induced surges.

Professor Chao Tzee Ching, director of Singapore's Institute of Science and Forensic Medicine, points out that the mean number of lightning deaths per million is comfortably low 0.2 in the UK but climbs to 0.6 for the US, 1.5 for SA and culminated in a whopping 1.7 for Singapore, which exceeds the annual number of American citizens fired.

  • How likely are you to be struck by lightning? 1 in 10456 cited by Men’s Health magazine.
  • No. of Deaths by natural hazards, 1940-1981: Lightning = 7741, Tornado = 5268, Flood = 4481, Hurricane = 1923 in the US.
  • When you hear thunder, you are already within range where the next ground flash may occur.
  • Men are struck by lightning four times more often than women.

ORIGINS OF LIGHTNING

Lightning is one of the most spectacular meteorological phenomenon and the most common severe weather to effect mankind directly.

The Convective theory proposes free ions in the atmosphere are captured by cloud droplets and then are moved by the convective currents in the cloud to produce the charged regions.’

.

The charge build-ups in the thunderclouds are unstable. When electric fields generated by the charge build-ups becomes too strong - typically 3-4 000V/cm at the altitude of the negative charge region of the cloud - electrical breakdown of the air occurs and charge is exchanged within the cloud or to the ground. Charge is exchanged by a lightning flash.
